What this is. The data underneath is the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census (the registration record for every company with a DOT number) joined to the SMS AB PassProperty file (the same data behind the public Safety Measurement System rankings). For each state, this site ranks the largest carriers that have at least minimal CMV inspection history (≥5 inspections in the rolling 24-month window). Carriers without inspection history — typically intrastate transit and school-bus operators, recently-registered carriers, or MCS-150 entries with apparent data-quality issues — are excluded from state rankings but remain searchable by DOT number or name when they're large enough to plausibly matter. National total in state rankings: 4,390 carriers across 54 states and territories; 93% have SMS records.
What this is not, yet. Not a complete carrier listing — FMCSA registers ~2 million motor carriers; this site indexes the top 100 by fleet size in each state.
